Acatenango: An Epic Adventure Told in Pictures

One of the most bucket list worthy experiences in Central America and Latin America as whole is hiking up Volcan Acatenango and spending the night watching the ferocious Fuego erupting and spewing it’s lava into the night sky. Instead of a classic guide, I thought I’d try something new and use pictures and captions to describe as much as I can of this once in a lifetime hike. Let me know your thoughts and critiques in the comment section below.

Enjoy!

My first view of the volcano came a couple weeks before while hiking to Lake Atitlan

The start of a journey

Our Crew: David, Carmel, Yarden, Yotam, and yours truly

Welcome!

Can’t forget the guide and his son, he was only 15 and already taking people up the volcano!

The start of the hike took us though dense jungle

We were soon joined by this adorable little thing

Photobomb!

As we got further up, the air got thinner and we had to rest more often

We also started worrying that it’d be too cloudy to see the eruptions

Views like this were not reassuring

Sure enough, these were the views of volcano when we reached our camp. You can tell just how pleased I am

Still, we would not be disheartened, and patiently sat down waiting for the clouds to clear, food packed by Chabad helping to keep us hopeful

While waiting, we were joined by this champ. She ended up staying with us until we made our way down the next morning.

Our optimism was rewarded when the clouds finally parted, like curtains in a theatre, leaving us with this awe-inspiring view!

Tired but happy
Let the wacky pics begin!

Finished product

As evening rolled in, we set to getting the fire going

Once going, the fire was a lifesaver in the night cold

Pictures can’t begin to describe the experience of watching a volcano erupt through the night!

We ended up sitting and watching the volcanos awesomeness from 7 until 2 am!!

It’s hard to pull your eyes off of!

We woke up just in time to see the sunrise over Volcan de Agua

Breakfast came with an opportunity

An opportunity I took

Oops! Fixed it

Sleepy selfie time!

Before we left, we had to destroy the one ring

One last pic with the old Fuego

The way down was uneventful until…

I decided I wanted to taste volcano dust before I left

The damage wasn’t too bad, but it sure stung!

After that, as you can see, I struggled to keep up for a short time. But it was no issue as…

We had reached the end of the trail. The best hike of my life (so far) was at an end 😦

I sure freaking do!!
