London Museum of the Home

Come see what your home may have looked like throughout different periods of London’s history in this small but insightful Hackney museum.

With many fully recreated living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and more; spread through many different times, this museum offers a look into the more mundane but relatable aspects of history than most of the other London museums.

Where: Well located within Hackney on Kingsland Road (the A10), the museum is just a minutes walk from Hoxton Overground Station, and easily connected to London in general with multiple popular bus routes stopping just outside the museum (the 149, 242, and 243 lines).

When: 10 am to 5 pm every day except Mondays, on which the museum is closed.

An interactive station at the museum

Who: The museum is suitable for all ages. The open displays may be more interesting to older audiences, while the interactive parts of the museum will suit children better (think dollhouses and dress-up).

How Long: The museum is relatively small (in London standards at least), one hour should be a reasonable amount of time to see all the museum has to offer. The gardens surrounding the museum make a great picnic spot so consider it if you’re visiting as part of a larger day out.

Highlights: For me, the dioramas of London households are by far the most interesting and engaging part of the museum. They’ve been made with care and amazing detail, and on each visit you’ll notice something new you hadn’t caught before.

Cost: Totally free!!

Nearby: The museum is a quick eight minute walk from the pretty Columbia Road Flower Market, and just ten minutes walk from one of my favourite summer walks; Regents Canal.
